What Is Grade 6A Mulberry Silk? A Buyer’s Guide to Silk Quality

Grade 6A mulberry silk generally refers to mulberry silk made using raw material described as meeting a high raw-silk quality grade. For procurement, however, the claim is meaningful only when the supplier identifies its grading basis and provides supporting documentation.

It does not, by itself, establish the weight, softness, durability or workmanship of a finished silk product.

For brands, wholesalers and importers, the practical task is to separate four purchasing questions: What is the material? How is the raw material graded? What are the fabric specifications? How will the finished goods be approved?

What Does the 6A Grade Apply To?

China’s GB/T 1797-2008 standard concerns raw silk. A Ministry of Commerce technical guide describes its named grades f

rom A through 6A, with 6A being the highest within that grading framework. The national standards platform currently lists GB/T 1797-2008 as valid. National standards record, Ministry of Commerce technical guide

This is more precise than saying that a finished pillowcase carries the “highest quality silk” certification.

When a supplier describes a product as “made from 6A,” ask which material batch the statement covers and how the supporting record connects to production.

Do not assume that all silk grading systems classify every silk type, yarn and finished fabric in the same way.

How silk is graded differs from finished-product inspection

Raw-material assessment and finished-goods inspection answer different questions.

For example, ISO 15625 specifies an electronic test method for defects and evenness of raw silk. It does not independently establish the quality of a completed bedding set. ISO 15625

A credible sourcing process therefore combines material records with fabric specifications, approved samples and production controls.

What Makes Mulberry Silk Different From Other Silk Types?

Silk is a natural protein fiber. Mulberry silk is associated with the domesticated silkworm Bombyx mori, whose larvae feed on mulberry leaves.

The term identifies a material source, not a finished-product performance level.

Different types of silk include mulberry and non-mulberry varieties, such as tussar silk. These materials should be described by their actual identity and construction rather than placed into a single marketing hierarchy.

For buyers comparing quality mulberry silk, confirm:

· Whether the fabric is pure silk or a blend.

· Whether the stated composition applies to all relevant fabric panels.

· The yarn preparation and fabric construction.

· Any finishes that affect appearance, handle or care.

· Which records support the material description.

Claims about the “longest silk” or “finest quality” are not substitutes for this information. Length alone does not explain all aspects of finished-product performance.

Silk Grade and Momme Weight Measure Different Attributes

A silk grade and a fabric weight should appear as separate fields in a specification.

Momme is a unit used to describe fabric mass per unit area. It helps buyers compare material substance, but it does not identify the raw-material grade.

Specification

What it describes

What it does not establish alone

Mulberry silk

Material source

Finished-product performance

Raw-material grade

Quality classification under an identified system

Fabric weight or sewing quality

Momme weight

Fabric mass per unit area

Fibre authenticity or product lifespan

Weave

Yarn interlacing and fabric construction

Fibre composition

Finished-goods requirements

Dimensions, workmanship and agreed performance

Raw-material traceability unless separately documented

Higher momme means greater fabric mass over the same area. For fabrics with the same composition, that indicates more material per unit area—but not automatically better drape, greater comfort or a longer service life.

Thread count is another construction-related measurement. A cotton bedding comparison based on thread count should not be directly substituted for a momme silk specification.

Comparing 19, 22, 25 and 30 momme silk

A 22 momme silk sample may be a useful starting point for a pillowcase program, but its suitability still needs to be assessed against the intended product.

Weight option

What buyers should compare

19 momme

Handle, coverage, construction and performance against the intended use

22 momme

Balance of fabric substance, drape, finishing and cost

23 momme

Whether the specified difference is measurable and commercially useful

25 momme

Additional weight, appearance and handling compared with lighter options

30 momme silk

Heavier construction, drape and suitability for the proposed product

Choosing 25 or 30 momme should be a product-development decision, not an automatic quality upgrade. Likewise, lower momme does not necessarily mean poor material.

Ask suppliers to state the measurement method, tolerance and whether the figure applies before or after finishing.

How Should Buyers Specify a Mulberry Silk Pillowcase?

A description such as “22 momme mulberry silk” identifies useful attributes, but it is not a complete purchase specification.

For a silk pillowcase, define the fabric, dimensions, closure, stitching, labels, care requirements and packaging before approving production.

The same principle applies to silk sheets and duvet covers, where fabric width, panel construction and colour consistency can become particularly important.

A practical specification should include:

Item

Information to confirm

Material

Fibre composition and the scope of the composition statement

Grade claim

Referenced system, supporting record and traceability

Fabric

Weave, target weight, tolerance and finish

Dimensions

Finished sizes, measurement points and tolerances

Construction

Seams, closure type and component requirements

Performance

Agreed tests and acceptance criteria

Presentation

Labels, packaging and carton configuration

For silk-filled comforters, specify the filling and shell separately. A fabric claim does not automatically describe the silk floss inside the product.

Why satin does not confirm fibre content

Satin describes a weave, not a material source. A satin fabric may contain silk, polyester or another fibre.

For mulberry silk fabric, record composition and construction separately. A glossy appearance or smooth hand cannot establish that a sample is real silk.

What Can a Blissy Silk Pillowcase Tell Buyers About Market Positioning?

A Blissy silk pillowcase is one retail example of a product described using both fabric weight and raw-material grade. Its official product page lists a 22-momme construction and a grade claim alongside other product details. Blissy product information

For private-label buyers, this illustrates how several specifications can support one retail proposition. It does not establish that products carrying similar descriptions are equivalent.

Compare the actual samples, dimensions, closures, documentation and agreed quality controls. Do not transfer another brand’s testing results or performance claims to your own collection.

Do Organic Silk and OEKO-TEX Describe the Same Thing?

Organic silk, fibre composition, raw-material grade and harmful-substance testing address different questions.

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 identifies textiles tested for harmful substances. Its scope should not be treated as proof of an organic production claim, a raw-silk grade or finished-product durability. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100

Before using a certification statement, verify:

· The certificate number and validity.

· The holder and covered product description.

· Whether the scope concerns materials, components or finished goods.

· Whether the supplied item falls within that scope.

If a supplier offers organic silk, request the specific evidence supporting that claim. “Natural silk” and “pure mulberry silk” do not independently establish organic status.

Verify Softness, Durability and Claims About Hair and Skin

High-quality silk depends on more than an attractive sample.

Softness can be influenced by finishing. The performance of silk fibers within a fabric also depends on yarn preparation, weaving, dyeing and subsequent handling.

For silk bedding marketed around hair and skin contact, distinguish observable material characteristics from claimed outcomes. A smooth surface does not, by itself, prove benefits for skin and hair or establish a medical effect.

The best silk for a collection is the material and construction that consistently meet the agreed requirements. Claims such as “best quality silk” should be supported by defined evidence rather than used as technical specifications.

Assess the finished sample for:

· Surface appearance and handle.

· Dimensions and construction.

· Closure operation and seam quality.

· Changes under the proposed care conditions.

· Relevant colourfastness and other agreed performance requirements.

For pillowcases and sheets, evaluate the actual finished colour and construction—not only an undyed fabric swatch.

Turn the Material Claim Into a Purchasing Specification

Before ordering high-quality mulberry silk products, ask the supplier to connect its material description to the goods being supplied.

Confirm the applicable grade record, composition, fabric weight, construction, approved sample and inspection criteria. Establish which documents and tests are needed before shipment.

MOQ, sampling and production timing should then be discussed against that complete brief. Stock fabric, custom dyeing, printed artwork and packaging may require different preparation and approval stages.
